National Security” is the subject of the 6th Annual National Security and Intelligence Symposium at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Prescott campus, to be held on Thursday, November 18, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Davis Learning Center Auditorium.
The symposium will address significant national security and legal challenges arising from the tensions created by environmental changes, such as water scarcity and other natural resources. Issues to be discussed include topic such as oil; climate change; China and the law of the sea; the security implications of the Pakistan flood; Israeli/Palestinian challenges with regard to natural resources; and global security. Discussions will also center on the economic implications of natural resources depletion and national security.
The keynote speaker will be Braden Allenby, J.D., PhD, Lincoln Professor of Engineering and Ethics, Professor of Law, Arizona State University. Among his numerous appointments, Dr. Allenby previously served as a member of the advisory board for the Secretary of Energy and Chair of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy. His publications and lectures span topics including, but not limited to: Environmental, Social and Economic Implication of Global Reuse and Recycling of Personal Computers; Complexity, Sustainability and the Anthropogenic Earth; What is Sustainable Engineering?; Understanding the Social and Environmental Dimensions of Nanotechnology; Engineering for the 21st Century: Managing Humanity’s Relationship with the Environment; and, Entrepreneurship in the Anthropocene.
Panelists include Celia Rumann, Associate Professor of Law, Phoenix School of Law, speaking on the topic of potential for increasingly scarce water supply as a target of terrorists. Also from Phoenix School of Law is Michael P. O’Connor, Professor of Law, speaking on neo-federalism and national security.

The symposium is hosted and presented by the Global Security and Intelligence Studies (GSIS) program at Embry-Riddle, Prescott. The GSIS program is the third largest degree program on campus and also includes a Chinese Language track. The university recently received a $222,000 grant from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) to develop a Security Operations track with the goal of educating entry-level security professionals ready to assume positions in the Intelligence Community upon graduation.
