ERAU - Global Security & Intelligence Op Ctr Opens - FBI Speaker

Prescott, Ariz., September 28, 2010 – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Global Security and Intelligence Studies (GSIS) degree program will celebrate the grand opening of new hands-on learning environment for students training to be intelligence and security operations professionals. The event is on Tuesday, October 5, 2 to 4 p.m. at the Prescott campus. At 6:30 p.m. that evening, the Honors’ program presents former FBI special agent Jim Hight, speaking on cyberterrorism.

The GSIS Eagle Operations Center officially opened to its first class this semester for the more than 200 students enrolled in the GSIS degree program, the university’s third largest degree program. The center is designed to train students in emergency response, mission readiness, and operational planning at many levels, including global, state and local. The facility features a situation room eight wall-mounted flat screen televisions for monitoring news and information channels, and multiple computer and laptop stations. An observation room is adjacent to “the pit,” or the situation room.

Students run through exercises that include emergency management training based on real-life scenarios provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). They also participate in “war games:” scenarios that challenge students to make decisions in complex international situations and without having complete information.

The grand opening event will feature remarks from Dr. Philip Jones, chair of the Department of Global Studies; Professor Bob Baker, GSIS degree program director; and Dr. Frank Ayers, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer. Visitors can tour the center and observe students engaged in an emergency management scenario. The Eagle Operations Center is located near the center of campus in Building 129, adjacent to the Eagle Learning Center (Building 17) and near the Hunt Student Union.

Mr. Hight’s talk, "Cyberterrorism: Infrastructure Attacks for Destruction and Disruption in the United States," takes place in the Davis Learning Center at 6:30 p.m.

As a former supervisor of one of the FBI’s elite Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTF), Mr. Hight oversaw intelligence gathering of terrorist threats, hostile intelligence services and important criminal cases. Mr. Hight was assigned to the Oklahoma City Field Office on April 19, 1995, when a bomb attack occurred on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City. Hight was designated a case agent for the Oklahoma City bombing from 1995-1997, remaining on the case through Timothy McVeigh’s trial and conviction. In 1997, Hight was promoted to supervisory special agent and served as an instructor and faculty member at the prestigious FBI Academy at Quantico, Va. From 2000 until his retirement, Hight was involved in national security and cybercrimes cases, supervising both an elite JTTF and a Cyber and Crimes Against Children Task Force.
